I want to be an Eco Warrior

Australian Bush
Climate Change is upon us... I realise that by the time it reaches mass media the cut off timeframe for action has long passed and I've missed the boat on being an eco pioneer... but a passion is a passion, and each time I read another exciting site, another biography about people who've cared enough about the world to dedicate their life to it, a feelilng rises in my chest, constricts and makes me aware that this is of vital importance and I need to be a part of it. What strikes me most is that from the one man battle (Mark Hands and his pursuit of the Inga tree solution for forestation in Brazil), to the public personalities (Al Gore), to the dedicated scientists (David Suzuki) or the awareness raising journalists and authors (George Monbiot) and even the politicians, everyone can contribute to Climate Change, no matter what their expertise.

Today in The Age, Victorians became the first global citizens to have their weekly Greenhouse emissions published. The Climate Change Group releases weekly indicators of where the emissions are coming from broken down by percentage (65% coal, 28% petroleum, 7% natural gas) and are consequently encouraged to take action to reduce the total weekly figure (1.919 million tonnes of greenhouse emissions). It may be a small start, but it's a step in the right direction as long as people are encouraged to take action the 'right' way.

Too often the populace is given erroneous information. Will the media encourage participating in a carbon offset program rather than simple turning off the lights? Will they encourage recycling without education that results in refuse which cannot be recycled? Will we feel like environmentalists while driving our hybrid cars because we've switched to green power? The role of the media now will determine whether or not climate change action takes place in time... and my role in the future is clear - to become properly informed on these issues so I can inform the public accurately! If only I can convince Ganesh to join the eco revolution with me :-)
